Liberty was Brewing at the Common Sense Tavern at Hollis Old Home Days

Patriotism, history, and plenty of fun came together at this year’s Hollis Old Home Days parade as the Hollis Town Republican Committee and the Common Sense Team celebrated the parade’s Revolutionary America theme.

Our Common Sense Team of Liz Barbour, Dr.Jim Kelly, and Jack Flanagan created a float that transported paradegoers back to the days when taverns were gathering places for neighbors, patriots, and revolutionaries to exchange ideas and debate the future of a new nation.

The 18-foot float carried the Common Sense Tavern, a warm colonial tavern scene complete with a fireplace, table, chairs, and a lively group of friends dressed in 18th-century mode.

Candidate Dr. Jim Kelly took on the role of General George Washington, greeting children along the parade route with a salute and a gift of an American flag to wave. Representative and candidate Liz Barbour appeared as Mrs. Washington in an 18th-century-style gown, complete with a hoop skirt. Representative Jack Flanagan drove the lead vehicle pulling the Common Sense Tavern through the center of Hollis.

The float itself carried messages drawn from America's history.

One side proclaimed “LIBERTY IS BREWING” accompanied by Patrick Henry’s famous 1775 declaration, “Give me liberty or give me death!”

The other celebrated “THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM” with New Hampshire General John Stark’s enduring words, “Live Free or Die.”

And as the tavern traveled down the parade route, the final message was emblazoned across the back:

“A REPUBLIC, IF YOU CAN KEEP IT.” Benjamin Franklin, 1787

As America continues to celebrate its 250th birthday, the Hollis Town Republican Committee and the Common Sense Team are proud to have brought  a little bit of 1776 to Hollis. For one beautiful September morning in Hollis, liberty was brewing once again. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
